"But how will you learn math?!"

My name's Leigh Brownell, and I'm a Rotary exchange student in Spain for the 2010-2011 year!

¡Feliz aniversario a mi! (12-3-10)

Primero, voy a escribir un poco en español solo porque me aburro y no puedo echarme una siesta hoy. Pues venga, puedo pero esta semana he tenido problemas con dormir… no podía. Que guay…

My sleep will soon be fixed though. Or at least I hope. I´m going to the Canary Islands tomorrow so if I don´t sleep I´ll just just suck it up and deal. This weekend is puente (literally meaning bridge, but they use this word for long weekends) and we have off until Wednesday.

Quick catch up on everything-

Spanish:
Going amazingly! Although I am still lacking a lot of grammar, and my writing is really atrocious, I can say virtually everything I want to say. And if I miss the words I want, I´m able to give a really good definition.

It´s interesting because my friends say I have a really strange vocabulary, and that it´s better than some Spanish people. I used the word lucido (lucid) a few days ago, and I think I caught them off guard.

The great thing is how similar it is to English. When I lack a word half the time I can say it with a Spanish accent and they will understand me. I think I´ve said this before, but it still proves to be true.

English: surprise
Spanish: sorprender
English: congestion
Spain: congestión

and there are a ton more.

Rotary:
Spain Rotary is really different than mine in the US, but so far all is good! We had a thanksgiving dinner a few  days ago with a bunch of the students and their families. I gave my first speech in Spanish! It was only for about three minutes, but either way I´m pumped. Estaba flipando en colores jaja la verdad.

In January we have cabalgata de los reyes and I´m going to dress up as a German! My mom´s coworker is German, so her cousin mailed us the official German Dirndl.

so cooool.

School:
I GOT A 5 IN GEOGRAPHY! I PASSED! I STUDIED, LEARNED, AND PASSED. IN SPANISH.

I cannot possibly describe how happy I was haha. The teachers read the grades aloud to the whole class, and when he read that I had a five, the whole class looked at me, and I look at him and go ¨cinco?? TENGO UN CINCO!?¨and then proceeded to start screaming while the applauded.

Another good thing, I have a 7 in philosophy right now! I freaked for that too haha but now I´m calm, seeing as that was a few days ago, and geo was today.

I just wanted to do another shout out to Rotary. My district at home had amaazing orientations and all the preparation we went through was really worth it. It´s three months, today, and although I wouldn´t say I´m fluent, people keep telling me I am. Homesickness, the language, the culture shock, Rotary warned us about everything. Así que, gracias para todo de todo. Estoy pasando mazoo de bien, y nunca quiero salir de aquí :)

Besos para todos!
